Sea Sailing from Cobbs Quay in Poole, Dorset on Mon 18th Aug & Mon 22nd Sept '08
We're delighted to be working again with the good folk of the Sports Forum, Poole, in offering sea sailing!
They have a specially converted nine-metre sailing catamaran, the Knoticat, which offers real 'hands on' sailing to people with a wide range of disabilities.
There are ramped entry ports, making access easy for most wheelchairs, a fully enclosed cabin and an accessible, electrically operated private toilet.
The Knoticat can take up to a maximum of 11 persons aboard, including crew. And they offer a wide variety of destinations, which could include: Swanage Bay and Old Harry Rocks; Poole Bay with Bournemouth Pier; a little further afield Weymouth and the picturesque Christchurch Bay and Harbour; or the Solent with its numerous ports, rivers and creeks.
As the Sailing section of their website - www.sportsforum.org.uk - explains "Where possible we try to encourage everybody to help sail the boat. This may be rope pulling, steering, or even dishing out the biscuits, regardless, it is a joint effort usually enjoyed by all.
However, if your pleasure is to just sit back and enjoy the trip, then that is our pleasure too. We are all there for just one reason, and that is to have a great day out."
Sounds very Sportability to us !
Sailing is by definition a very weather dependent activity and the Knoticat crew wish to point out that in colder weather the trips will only last between 3 -5 hours at the most. You are advised to bring suntan lotion, a hat and sunglasses if there's even a hint of sun; and suitable warm and waterproof irrespective of the forecast. At sea, conditions can change rapidly !
Important Note: If you are booked to come along then please check in with local man, Tim Worner, the day before to update the weather situation and ensure we are able to go out. Please also bring along a packed lunch for your own consumption, although drinks and biscuits will be provided free of charge.
Knoticat is based at 'F' Pontoon, Cobbs Quay, Poole and the easiest parking on Poole Quay is the Thistle Hotel car park that charges £4.00 all day.
Tim will be around to meet and greet.
Trips are made under the watchful eye of highly experienced and qualified skippers; and every effort is undertaken to ensure the safety of all aboard. Of course there is all the requisite safety equipment, devices, and first aid boxes, which are diligently kept up to date, and there's even a qualified first aider on board throughout.
It's important to note that the crew are there to sail the boat and look after our safety. If you need personal assistance the please ensure that you make arrangements before arriving, either by having your own assistant/carer/family member or friend join us; or by prior arrangement with another participant.
Please also note that prior to sailing everyone must join
